Reasons to Rise
Even on weekends I can't seem to stay in bed no later than 7am cause my mind is so occupied with what I can accomplish in a day. Call it a curse or call the two furry alarm clocks my dogs, I'm up at the break of dawn to start my day. Another reason to get up early is to get my fix of that morning air mixed with ethanol, oil and the sounds of V8's warming up at the race track. I love a good drag race, different classes, and different builds keeps the momentum going and unlike land speed racing you're racing against another driver in a third to a quarter mile run so the adrenaline keeps going. I heard about theses races since the beginning of last year from people at the Horseless Carriage Holiday Excursion I covered and luckily was able to recall it last minute.
The Antique Nationals are held at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana and feature some builds from mild to wild. Unlike other car events I've attended, I particularly favor the one that actually have racing action rather than a stagnant car show in a parking lot. The amount of cars that ran that day was more than I expected and each minute and second spent walking around kept me busy on the shutter button. I'm usually on racing hiatus after the racing season ends in November till the season opener in May so being able to get a warm up and gather inspiration at the drag strip was a good way to start off the race season this year.
