Monument Valley | Utah

Valley Of The Rocks

First stop on our little road trip up to Colorado was Monument Valley, right at the Arizona-Utah border. As we were reaching the north tip of Arizona, the lightning and clouds were not too far behind when we stopped for some breakfast so we had to get ahead of it for best conditions in Monument Valley. We arrived a lot earlier than expected so we didn't mind driving around waiting for some sunshine to open up in the afternoon. The weather out there changes rapidly in September, so it's wet and dry consecutively but you get random lighting combinations with the dark clouds and patches of sun rays peeking through. There was so much to see just driving along the guided path and being able to pull over and take photos was a major plus for a first time experience.

I got to give it up to nature photographers for being able to capture the epic feel of a landscape view because I struggle to capture that when I travel. I figured why not make the most of a road trip between all the car stuff and take a few stabs at some landscapes. Utah is photogenic as you think it would be so I would wake the kids before crossing stateline to let them see all the changing terrains. The clouds started to clear up at the end of the trail and like center stage lighting, the sun came out to light up Artist's Point for some grand finale photos. The storm came shortly after we left the park so we had just the right amount of time to explore before the downpour and get ready for our next stop, Arches National Park!
