Shot Beyond The Stars
& Landed on the Moon
That's exactly where I aimed to be - Mooneyes Area-1 in Yokohama. When I think of classic cars and hot rods, Dean Moon, a major pioneer behind speed and safety parts, comes to mind. A man born and raised in an era when speed freaks were breaking land speed records in the Bonneville Salt Flats, Dean Moon's equipment was built to last. In the 1960's, Mooneyes opened shop in Santa Fe Springs, California which is still open and building hot rods. After Dean Moon passed away in 1987, Mooneyes equipment slowed down production. Years after his death, Moon's good friend and Japan buyer, Shige Suganuma opened up Mooneyes USA in Yokohama.
Area-1 consists of Mooneyes merchandise, car and motorcycle parts for sale, a showcase case garage, and an American themed diner. Although my wife would not allow me to buy Mooneyes Discs for our family xB, I had a blast just browsing the shop and shooting the display bikes and cars around the facility. It's crazy to see how Japanese car enthusiasts have grown to love and carry on the American hot rod culture, for a second I thought I was on US soil.

After shooting I built up a mean appetite and how convenient it was to have an American diner right next door. More than 90% of my meals were Japanese food so it was a treat to have some American diner grub to bring me back for a short moment, the even had Tapatio!

Fellas, if you're gonna drag your lady around Japan to follow you gawk at cars for hours, make sure to feed her right. You're might get a look like this...
